Six Sigma Is The Only Way To Go

Six Sigma is to the business world what ice cream is to children. It is something that can please a room full of executives in a matter of minutes. Most big wigs think that they understand what their business needs in order to be successful but after a period of time most find that try after try they are not getting the results they are looking for. When you are looking for true success mild and moderate successes simply won't do.

6 sigma process Of course, there are millions of business management techniques out there and while many claim to be as effective and renowned as Six Sigma very few measure up. Perhaps it is becasue Six Sigma combines everything that is important in business and ties it together in a package that provides a comprehensive training, a good solid plan, support and preparation, and of course a way to produce and refine measurable results. There are no other programs out there that succeed at being this comprehensive and cohesive.

Most believe that Six Sigma is so successful simply because it was developed by Motorola, however important this fact was at the inception of 6 Sigma at this point in time over 3 decades later, Six Sigma is only still being used widely across the board, very simply because it has proven itself to be one of the most effective training and certification plans on the market today.

And if you are unsure as to whether the 6 Sigma process will work for your business it is important to understand that some of the top companies in the world are using Six Sigma to gain success even in the current economic climate. Companies such as Bank of America, Home Depot, Honeywell, 3M, and GE are just a few of the top companies that have integrated Six Sigma to true success.

For the most part, six sigma can work for a wide variety of companies large and small. In order to make sure that you provide your company with the best overall chance for success you will want to enroll your entire staff in a certification program. These types of programs and the essential coaching that comes after them can have you seeing results within weeks of completing the training sessions and these classes are not only available at universities world wide but are also available in an online format to make it easier to get your entire staff trained.

Allow disagreement on improvement teams, but not dissention

To understand the value of allowing disagreement on teams, one must consider the reason the six sigma team was formed in the first place. The function of the team is to develop and implement changes that lead to improvement. By definition, a team consists of a number of individuals, meaning that input from more than a single person is needed. For maximum team effectiveness, each member must feel free to speak his or her mind without fear of repercussion. This atmosphere is necessary to get the ideas on the table. Otherwise that one breakthrough idea might never be submitted. One important ground rule should be that, once an idea is shared, it becomes property of the group and no longer belongs to a single individual. The discussion that follows becomes one that focuses on the issues at hand and not the personalities involved. This can reduce the feelings of rejection and intimidation that a member may experience once the pros and cons are debated. Even a rejected idea may spark a thought from another member that might not have otherwise occurred. This is where the team as a whole becomes greater than the sum total of its parts. Consequently, no contribution to team dynamics should be viewed as a failure.

To prevent dissension, disagreement should actually be encouraged. Every member should be free to speak his or her mind. Otherwise, dissension may occur because of the feeling that only the opinions of one or two members matters. Fear of conflict can actually hinder success. On the contrary, healthy debate within a group is important in reaching consensus, which can only occur after any reservations on the part of one or more members have been overcome. This does not necessarily mean that each member is in total agreement with everything that has been said or done, but that their concerns have been resolved to the point that they can support and take ownership in the recommendations of the group.

Six sigma's link to business' bottom line

Six Sigma is a measure of a company’s ability to provide quality from the manufacturing level to the end product. It employs six strategies that vary between the average and the required specification in determining if the expected quality has been attained. For a company to achieve Six Sigma rating, it cannot produce more than 3.4 rejects for every million products. These defects are usually viewed from a customer’s point of view and cannot be sold to them.

6 sigma green belt The Six Sigma methodology strives to improve how business is conducted with the overall result being 100 percent quality products and services while at the same time reducing expenses and waste. Companies and businesses across the board are always looking for individuals who have a Six Sigma certification as they may help them in reducing waste and increasing quality.

The Six Sigma system is divided into three levels which include the Yellow Belt, which is the basic training that an individual receives. The individual at this level supports Six Sigma projects and partakes in problem solving and finds the root causes of problems. They are however not project managers and usually report to the Green and Black Belts.

The Green Belts are the worker bees of the Six Sigma; they are expected to offer relevant information that is usually received from Yellow Belts. They are not ready to be leaders and but are active team leaders.

The Black Belts are the leaders and are responsible for supervising both the Green and Yellow Belts. Individuals in this group look to be more efficient and productive by eliminating any defects that would disqualify the company from receiving a Six Sigma rating. The Black Belts are expected to manage the company and ensure that the Six Sigma methodology is implemented in the whole business.

The aim of every business is to reduce expenses and increase profit .Six Sigma can help a business increase its bottom line by eliminating wastage of resources and expenses that are not beneficial to the running of the business. Since the number of defects should be minimized as much as possible, the quality of products is increased which means customers are satisfied as their needs are met.

Minimize the Risk of the Unknown in Six Sigma Projects

There are times when the reasons behind a project failing is unknown. This is actually relatively common because there is no technique that will help with the integrity of the decision making process. The good news is that there are methods to help with keeping that integrity in check. The trick is to find out which events and processes have damaged the project to help with finding out where it went wrong.

6 sigma stakeholder Six Sigma helps to do that because it will aid with increasing the knowledge. It will also help in other ways, which will aid with improving the success-fulness of a project.

The first is through the use of insurance tools, which will help to manage the level of unknown risk. These are often something that many businesses will ignore because they will not help with the process of gaining the knowledge about the project. However, by looking into them, it will help with the quicker process of solving the problem.

There are a number of different tools that can be looked into and one of those is through Charter Development. There is always a charter in some way, shape or form. By ignoring and forgetting about the charter, there is a part of the project that will be forgotten about. There are some common areas that are commonly forgotten about – the statements of the problem being too vague, the selection of the team being poor and even the estimation of costs being careless. Without these being focused on during the project and after the failure, the next projects are bound to fail.

The next tool is the Stakeholder Analysis, which is the process of the management selection and the resources used. This is usually the process of looking into the human elements. Without looking into these, a project is definitely going to fail.

The above two are known as the “define” section and it is important to look into the “measure” of the tools. The first is the Measurement System Analysis. This is the process of the decision making and poor decisions will always lead to a project failing. The most common problems are when the data has been looked at incorrectly or the wrong data has been used. There may even be problems with the way that the data has been collected.

The Team Facilitation is another are during this phase. It is important to look into the way that the team works together, especially during the analyzing of the data. If the data is analyzed incorrectly due to the team not being able to work together, the project is going to fail.

What is Lean Management?

Lean management is a part of the Six Sigma methodology that focuses on reducing waste, inventory, customer response time and several other things. Lean management is a style that company managers use; which is part of lean manufacturing, a methodology first used by Toyota. The principles of lean management are credited to Taiichi Ohno, and date back to World War II. Ohno is known for this, and the philosophy he developed that focused on waste elimination. Lean management requires a specific type of focus and attitude by managers using this system. The managers must have a frame of mind that seeks continuous improvements for the company, for the long run.

six sigma workers The philosophy of lean management aims at improving productivity in a company, and increasing profits. Six Sigma is a methodology that focuses primarily on improving all of the processes a business uses. Lean management takes this a step further by focusing on reducing waste using 10 specific principles. These principles focus on several things, including eliminating waste. Companies, using lean management, focus on minimizing inventory and maximizing the flow of processes.

They study all of the company’s processes, and find areas that are wasteful, or non-productive. Other principles, involved with lean management, deal with pleasing customers. Lean management understands the value of customer satisfaction, and attempts to meet customer requirements and demand for goods and services. Lean management also tries to accomplish processes the right way, the first time. Trial and error can be a good thing, but with lean management, too many attempts are considered wasteful. Other principles include partnering with suppliers to build good relationships, giving power to workers and dwelling on constant improvements in the company.

One method used under lean management is the Six Sigma DMAIC method. It uses a five-step process to accomplish the stated principles. This process is made up of defining, measuring, analyzing, improving and controlling. This process is used to promote continuous improvements in an organization. When Ohno developed the theory of lean manufacturing, he identified seven common wastes. These seven items are things that companies, with lean management, focus on. He called them “the 7ws” and they are defects, over-production, waiting, transporting, movement, inappropriate processing and inventory. Each of these items can cause waste within a company. Companies must investigate each of these areas in order to successfully improve all processes used. Companies, that institute lean management, often begin noticing improvements in processes and

The Three Top Reasons For Six Sigma Success

Many companies were leery to try out Six Sigma and quite a few thought that those companies that were claiming Six Sigma success were just blowing smoke. Honestly, one of the reasons for this was 6 Sigma just seemed to simple and truthfully that is because it was and still is very simple. Six Sigma is one process that incorporates three basic principles to make one winning combination.

six sigma 1. Goal Setting – For a long, long time businesses and managers have known that one of the biggest keys to a company’s success is goal setting. Setting goals that are attainable, realistic, and graduated can help any company to attain the success that they are seeking. It is not a new concept for a company to say that goal setting was at the crux of their success.

2. Team Work – Nothing is quite as important to Six Sigma success as teamwork. This program is one that is designed to be used in a group dynamic setting and each individual has their own role in Six Sigma. The system is designed to have employees at each level of a business working together toward common goals and to collaborate for the best possible results. The tiered management system is one that lends itself to working together in such a way that incorporates dedication on all levels for the highest overall results.

3. Statistical Analysis – Statistics is another aspect of Six Sigma that helps to make this program so successful. Instead of trying to guess at results, this program helps a company measure and then revise their goals to help them attain the highest levels of success possible in all areas of business. It is important to realize that by analyzing and refining results that companies can make fewer mistakes and catch most before they begin to affect their bottom line.

Six Sigma is so tremendously successful because it combines a variety of successful business management techniques and places them in a winning business structure to create a winning climate for success down the line. By improving customer experience and refining results companies find as others before them have that Six Sigma is a program that can help any company improve their bottom line. Most companies find that the efficiency of the work environment makes for an excellent business climate and one that is heading for major success and while many companies are a bit skeptical of Six Sigma those who have used it with success know how well it works.

Building A Successful Business From The Bottom Up

Many think that the key to running a successful business is to put in place the best possible management team. In essence, however, a successful business is really built from the bottom up and if you really are looking to run a successful business then you will want to make sure that you are selecting the lower level employees that serve as the best reflection for your business.

management team Management processes such as Six Sigma, for instance, acknowledge that the way to better profitability for a company is through improving the experience of their customers. In Six Sigma as it was first initiated this involved refining the products a company was making to allow the customer the best overall experience from a manufacturing perspective. As time has gone on customer service based businesses have become included in Six Sigma and in these businesses the product is considered the customer service and that is where having the correct employees on the front line dealing with your customers can truly enhance your customers’ experiences ten fold.

When it comes to making service related business decisions it is important that you first assess who it is you want representing your business and what qualities you think that your customers will be looking for. Will they want customer service representatives who are friendly and helpful, those who are knowledgeable, and efficient? Surely most businesses realize that those individuals that they are putting on their front line are at the very least equally important to if not more important than the managers that are leading them.

Your management team is a very important aspect of your business but their job is enhanced and made much simpler when they are in fact managing a productive team of customer based employees who will go above and beyond to get the job done at any cost. When you look carefully at the different ways you can manage a company you must note that companies that build their business from the bottom up tend to have better overall customer service and better results then companies that work in reverse.

No matter what management process you select just be sure to keep in mind the fact that building a business is a team effort and when building a team you want to make sure that you have employees who excel at their position at every level of the company. And ideally you would have only employees that excel and exceed your expectations throughout your entire company.

Getting Your Six Sigma Implementation Right The First Time

Six Sigma is something that many businesses are using in a variety of different marketplaces to help them attain a higher level of both success and profits. When it comes to this management process, most companies struggle at first to attain success and this is not due to flaws within the system itself but rather in the process of implementation.

6sigma process workflow Even the best tools must be used correctly if they are to obtain the desired result and 6 Sigma is no different. Most companies work hard to facilitate proper training of employees and make sure that they put in place a coaching staff for the beginning of the implementation process. Each company will have its own needs regarding the amount of time that it will need coaching to get the process implemented correctly and fortunately those companies that begin with coaching from the start find it easier to iron out the kinks in the process in a timelier manner.

The truth is while this method of implementation may wind up costing a company a little bit more it will also help to expedite Six Sigma results which will help improve a company’s bottom line more quickly. Increasing profitability is what Six Sigma is truly all about and this is why so many companies are training and implementing it but the success really relies on getting it implemented correctly.

Without structured implementation and coaching a company may begin to doubt the benefits of 6 Sigma and may even over time give it a bad name. After all, if you don’t know how to use something it will be difficult to make it profitable to your business.

One of the biggest problems that companies who implement the program without coaching face is the fact that initially the process may seem to work and may even increase the company’s bottom line but over time it may begin to disintegrate. These false results tend to make companies think that they are on the right track with their implementation only to hit a stumbling block a little further down the line.

It is best for companies to spend a little bit extra time and money to make sure they get the implementation process right the first time. In the long run this can save quite a bit of money and time as well as many headaches down the road. Don’t be fooled by false results, coaching can help ensure you get it right to help achieve lasting, long term results.

Targeting Your Business To The Right Demographic

When it comes to selling your business you need to be careful in your approach to your business marketing. Some companies feel that saturation of the market is going to get them what they are looking for but in many cases this type of advertising simply falls flat because it doesn’t have a true target.

marketing business Whether it is a product or a service that you are peddling it is important to figure out first and foremost who your intended customer is. You want to narrow them down as much as possible either to a specific type of individual including race, age, gender, and need or at least to a larger encompassing group. Once you have landed on this specific demographic it is then time to begin thinking about how what you are selling will benefit them.

Some companies know right away which aspects of their products or service they tend to play up for a specific audience. If you aren’t really sure which aspects of your products are the biggest sell points to a group of individuals then you are best off asking them either in person or via a questionnaire. Getting feedback from your current customer base will help you to really understand the customer’s perspective on the products and services that you are offering. This will make you better able to highlight the assets that are most important to those actually supporting your business.

There are of course certain aspects of a business that can serve as excellent sell points. These include the running of an environmentally friendly business, the ways in which your business can save a customer time and/or money, or a customer service orientated business slant are for the most part the things that a customer is looking for. Taking one of these approaches to your business is a safe bet but when you use some of the specifics gathered from studying a particular group of individuals you can really make sure that your advertising hits home.

Advertising is not the only aspect of your business that is important because although a good advertising campaign can really improve the profitability of your business it won’t take a bad business very far. Many business owners think that just getting customers in the door is the most important part of their business and they will say and do anything in their advertising campaigns to do just that. When push comes to shove however, customers will not be fooled by empty promises. They want to see what they were promised when they walk through your door and if they don’t you best expect that they will turn around and walk back out.

The Benefits of Test Optimization

Testing of industrial processes, whether of software code or the performance of a product under varying physical circumstances, is a key component of quality control that needs to be done for every product batch, every software update. Testing allows for the control of certain variables to test product performance under realistic conditions and provide for a margin of security in case part of the production or code writing process allowed problems to creep into the final product. Of course, simply testing every conceivable scenario the product may be expected to face is impossible in an environment of lean budgets and tight timelines. Optimized testing is key to profitability and productivity.

Benefits of test optimization are manifold but must be conducted from a particular frame of mind that emphasizes what is of immediate importance and sets aside lesser concerns for the sake of focused examination of key performance related components. Many testing scenarios simply throw one challenge or another at a product and see how much it can take before failing. Code testing takes a similar approach - a high volume of tests designed to determine how much the software can take before crashing. The problem here is that such testing effectively focuses on longevity prior to complete failure - but this is not necessarily the most important thing to a customer. A customer wants to know how reliable the product will be when asked to perform its core functions. Optimized testing needs to determine what processes or components support core functionality and then target them to see if they're reliable.

So determine exactly what components or code strings are fundamentally important - what piece, if it is missing, makes all other operations impossible? List those components and develop a testing plan that aims to examine the performance of these pieces one at a time. Try to break them - determine exactly what sort of scenarios will guarantee failure or severe degradation and catalog them. Then, after testing is complete, see what conditions of failure various components have in common and perform a risk analysis to determine how likely these conditions are to confront the end user.

Such an optimization of testing can save time and money - rather than utilizing volume and stress as the primary metrics develop scenarios that will cause major failure in vital components. It may seem counter intuitive to spend time focusing on particular scenarios and conditions, but over time a movement towards a more focused testing process can be more effective than utilizing stress scripts. With a better idea of what components are vulnerable and what demands a user will likely place on them optimized testing can provide benefits up and down the development cycle and reduce support overhead in the long run.

Getting six sigma green belt certification

Six Sigma is a well-known way of creating improvements within an organization, and certain businesses even provide their staff with training and certification in this approach. Others find that that have to look for this career booster on their own.

If you are in the latter category, consider the type of training that suits you best. Some programs make online options available, and in other cases, you would be required to attend classes onsite. Regardless of which route you take, you must conduct genuine DMAIC projects and successfully complete an exam as well.

What you can do

Begin by analyzing the independent agencies that provide this training and certification, and find the one seems to meet your needs. These choices include American Society for Quality, Motorola, Six Sigma Online and Six Sigma. Focus on the time required, the cost, the possibility of training online and the reputation of the certifying agency.

Once you have been accepted to participate in a program, you will be trained in process improvement and measurement, the DMAIC approach, team dynamics, statistical analysis, and other related topics. To accomplish this, note that you will be using a statistical software package to work with data. Ordinarily, you will know in advance the minimum score that you must achieve in order to remain in the program and to be certified as well.

What you must do

In some programs, you will only have to submit one Six Sigma project, and in other cases you must complete at least two. In addition, it may also be possible to for you to complete one of your projects while you are at work if you obtain the necessary approval from you supervisor. Topics usually covered in doing a project of this type include defect reduction, cost savings and similar business measures. You may also be asked to submit an affidavit that has been signed by your project sponsor.

Review the requirements of your certifying body and adhere to them exactly. Next you must submit the results of your project in the prescribed format, along with any required paperwork. Be aware that, along with the cost of your training program, you may have to pay a modest fee to obtain your Six Sigma certification.

What is Lean Six Sigma

Lean Six Sigma is one of the branches of the Six Sigma system that seeks to optimize the process in order to reduce costs. Its end goal is not just to limit costs but to make the technique more effective. It helps organizations by not just making things more efficient but in coming up with more efficient things. It is also referred to as the Six Sigma Lean, Lean Speed or Lean Method.

dmiac process Lean helps identify steps to make the company run in a more efficient manner from the first stage down to the last stage of product formation. During economic recession, manufacturing concerns have turned to Lean Six Sigma to find answers on how to reduce costs without sacrificing quality of their products.

The Lean system makes use of the DMAIC processes which means Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve and Control. The main focus of this methodology is simply to eliminate all types of wastes. Cutting costs becomes one of the natural results.

To get a certification in Lean system, the company must focus on five primary areas: control of process, improvement of process, data analysis and getting to the root cause of the problem, measuring and collecting data and finally, define issues and prioritize them.

The trainee usually learns various techniques. For instance, to be able to get to the root cause of the issue, the trainees are told to ask why 5 times. This is called the 5 why analysis. The explanation behind this strategy is that usually the first three answers to the whys would assume the reason for the problem. The fourth and fifth whys enable the trainee to arrive at a clearer idea as to why the issue occurred. In an overwhelming number of cases, 9 out of 10, the root cause is the inability of the management to understand the Lean methodology thus causing errors.

Another area where the Lean system is beneficial is during brainstorming sessions. A huge part of the Six Sigma process is accomplished by teams. At times, it may be necessary to combine teams to come up with better solutions and introduce improvements.

During brainstorming sessions, the leader learns defer judgment and criticism on off topic ideas. Everybody is welcome to make a suggestion no matter how unlikely the idea may see. This technique will ensure the success of brainstorming by extracting useful ideas to solve the problem.

As the business applies the principles of Lean, issues revolving on establishing a primary manufacturing technique, enhancing product quality, customer satisfaction and securing new customers are all addressed effectively.

The Three Traits You Will Need To Possess To Get Ahead

Most companies prefer to hire from within their company structure, for the most part because individuals who already work within a company know more about the company, what management is looking for, and have a proven track record.  For those individuals who are just looking for a position based on their level of education, training, and experience, this could be a detriment to them.  Ultimately, when a company begins looking at its established employees to hire from within they will be using a much different set of criteria from those they would use when doing a mass hiring through the general public.  If you are looking to get hired for a position from within a company that you are already working you will want to make sure that you have shown upper management the following three traits as these will be very high on the list of things they are looking for from an up and coming manager.

  1. Communication.  If you can’t communicate then very simply don’t bother applying.  Communication is key to success in business and you must not only be able to communicate ideas effectively but also to speak to all other employees with respect as well.
  2. Hard Working.  When the management team begins to look at current employees one factor that can work in your favor is having a track record of hard work.  They will look at how many days you have been tardy and absent and also how many times you have stayed late or volunteered for additional work that wasn’t your responsibility.
  3. Knowledgeable.  One of the biggest assets to hiring someone from within the confines of the business is to be hiring someone who already knows and understands the inner workings of the company.  Taking the time to do your homework about the company will help to get you promoted.

Business Management

These three things can singlehandedly make or break your chances of getting promoted.  If you are looking for an opportunity for advancement then you will want to make sure that you have these three areas covered.  Training may look good on a resume but practical knowledge and a good track record will hands down help you get promoted with just about any company across the board.

The Role Of A Six Sigma Green Belt

six sigma green belt Six Sigma is a program that came to be back in the mid 1980’s through the great minds of the Motorola Company. It was a system that was a culmination of many different business techniques and combined all the best of the best from each school of thought. It works to reduce the variations in the business process and to eliminate both waste and errors. Students of Six Sigma learn on a variety of different levels and each color signifies an increased level of knowledge of the process. A person begins the program and earns a green belt. In order to accomplish this an individual must complete the Green Belt Certification Training Program and pass a stringent exam and have at least three years of experience to receive certification. This individual then works under the careful supervision of a Black Belt for a period of time so that they can participate in projects but it is the black belts who actually run the projects.

Just because a person is a Green Belt however, does not mean that they are insignificant to the Six Sigma process. In business these individuals play a key role in successfully executing projects as they learn the practices well enough to move up to Black Belt positions. Through this role the Green Belts learn to identify problems within the production process which is an important step to learning all they need to in order to move to the next level of 6 Sigma.

Green Belt certification is valid for a lifetime and does not need to proceed Black Belt certification although most feel that Green Belt certification first helps to bring the Black Belt and Master Black Belt programs into better perspective. Green Belts are an essential part of Six Sigma implementation and this is a great place for people to kick off their knowledge about the 6 Sigma Program.

six sigma Green Belts and Project Champions

Without a doubt, Green Belts are given considerably less instruction than are Black Belts concerning the various methods, techniques, and tools of Six Sigma process. Typically, they are given somewhere between three and ten days of training, while Black Belts get as many as twenty days or more. Green belt certification varies from one business to the next.

six sigma green belt

Among the requirements commonly expected for Green Belt certification are the following: finishing a period of training, successfully passing an online or written test, and finalizing a Green Belt project. Green Belts are generally taught the Six Sigma DMAIC methods, along with a more limited set of tools, such as basic statistics. In order to keep up their certification requirements, many corporations require their Green Belts to successfully finish one project for each year. Once such certification is obtained at the company in question, it is commonly not accepted and recognized at a differing business.

Project Champion Training and Requirements

Project Champions’ roles require the understanding of the Six Sigma teams’ basic techniques. This training is intended to create familiarity with the techniques and their tools for the project Champions to understand both the varying strengths and the limitations of these tools. In such a way, project Champions are able to keep reaching for the impossible, as they continuously endeavor to help their teams achieve new potential. In this manner, the project Champions gain familiarity with such techniques so that they are able to vigorously perform their day to day analyses, giving them a helpful means of sustaining project success.

The specific training for project Champions is comprised of a significant range of different possible versions. There are training programs that involve highly focused two day long sessions. In these kinds of sessions, project Champions undergo a simulation of real world business situations to utilize the DMAIC improvement cycle. Still other programs involve full week regimens in which the project Champions are taught and put into practice the main Six Sigma tools that they coach the various Belt roles in as the project continues through its various stages towards completion. Regardless of how long such sessions prove to be, it is critical to train project Champions before the commencement of the projects to improve processes within the business. This training turns out to be a key factor for the total success or failure of a business’ Six Sigma endeavors. It is not an intuitive set of skills to lead a team along the path of process design or improvement. This form of leadership requires significant training, preparation, communication, and above all else, proper execution, to succeed in the organization.
